Paying Business Rates

Direct Debit

Pay by Direct Debit and you have a choice of payment dates - 1st, 15th or 25th of the month over either 10 or 12 instalments. Spreading payment over 12 months reduces the monthly instalment.

If you have not yet opted for Direct Debit, we can arrange for you to pay this way over the telephone so please contact the business rates team by calling 01992 785504. Alternatively, you can download a Direct Debit Mandate here and return the completed form to the Council. Please note, the information collected on this form is necessary to administer your Business Rates and fulfil the Council’s statutory functions, and will not be used for any other purposes.

Completed Direct Debit instructions may be returned to the Council either in person or by post.

If you do not pay by Direct Debit your business rates are due as per the instalments set out on your bill.  If you have not expressed a preference these instalments will be set to fall due on the first of the month over 10 months between April, the beginning of the financial year and the following January. 

Online payments

You can pay online through this website using a valid debit or credit card.

We accept the following cards:

  • MasterCard
  • Maestro
  • Visa
  • Visa Electron


We do not accept American Express or Diners cards.


You will need a valid debit or credit card for this service.

Our online payment system uses a 'pop up' window as part of the functionality, so if you have a 'pop up blocker' installed on your PC you will need to temporarily switch this off to make a payment.  This can be achieved simply by holding down the CTRL key on your keyboard whilst clicking the link.


You can call our telephone line on 0845 601 7620 to reach an automated response system which enables debit and credit card payments to be made using a keypad telephone.

When ratepayers call the automated telephone line number, they will be asked to enter their account number, the amount to be paid and their debit or credit card details. Calls can be made from a landline at the local rate and from mobile phones at the usual mobile service providers rates. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.


A cheque made payable to 'Broxbourne Borough Council' should be posted to:

Please ensure you write your business rates account number (which can be found on your business rates bill) on the back of your cheque when making payments, to ensure correct allocation of funds.

In person

Payment can be made at any of the Council's one stop shops by debit or credit card.

Post office

You can pay by cash, cheque or debit card at any Post Office counter, remember to take your bar-coded bill with you for reference to your account number.


PayPoint can be found in newsagents, convenience stores, garages and off-licenses, many of which are open outside normal office hours. There is a good choice of PayPoint outlets within the Borough and 19,000 nationwide. To find your local PayPoint or Post Office outlet follow the link to


You can make payments via your bank by standing order, bank automated credit and telephone or internet instruction.
