Business rate appeals

You can appeal against your rateable value if:

  1. The Valuation Office Agency changes your rateable value and you disagree with the new valuation
  2. There is a material change in circumstances which you believe affects the value of your property, such as a change in its physical state or use, a physical change in the locality or a change in the use of a neighbouring property

You should first contact the Valuation Office Agency to ask them to look at your rateable value. 

There is a new business rates appeal process in England from 1 April 2017 known as check, challenge, appeal. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) deals with checks and challenges, while the independent Valuation Tribunal for England handles appeals.  Details of how to do this are held on the VOA’s website at
